The Funk Firm Achromat is a lot more than just a replacement mat for your turntable. It has the potential to transform your turntable entirely. We have a number of customers who swear by it and have tried it ourselves on various turntables. We have been surprised at just how effective the Funk Achromat is.
Stylus friction has a tendency to send pressure waves through the record. If unabsorbed this energy will find its way back into the playback loop and result in a muddling of the sound. The best way to defeat this problem is to create a mechanical-acoustic impedance match between the record and the playing surface - that way the energy is absorbed and removed from the playback system. Soft felt, bouncy rubber, hard glass, paper, cork etc don't work this way and that is where the achromat comes in.
The material the Funk Achromat is made from is expanded polyvinyl, a foamed vinyl designed to create a 100% mechanical-acoustic impedance match. Put quite simply its very effective on most turntables - enabling them to produce a far cleaner sound. We have found improved mid range detail and better controlled bass are major benefits. It is also very effective at damping any ringing in the turntable platter.
