Old mono records can be played with a stereo stylus, however it can cause problems. Mono records are cut differently from stereo records and for best results require a stylus specifically designed for mono replay. Stereo styluses can (depending on the record) sound a lot noisier and thinner than the same mono record played with a mono stylus
This where the Ortofon OM D 25 M becomes useful. Its a slip on stylus which can be used on the same cartridge body as Ortofon's stereo styli for the OM series, but it is specifically designed for use with mono recordings. The result wil be less surface noise, improved dynamics and a fuller bodied sound than you might expect from a stereo stylus on a mono record.
It is especially handy as it can be used on the same setup as your OM stereo stylus by simple virtue of swapping the stylus over and making a adjustment to the downforce.
