Because shellac 78s have a much wider groove than vinyl 33s and 45s, standard styli are not suitable and a special stylus is required.
The Ortofon 78 Stylus is designed for playing 78rpm shellac records and is a snap in stylus replacement for the Ortofon OM range of phono cartridges - The OM5e, OM10, OM20, OM30 and OM40. The OM5e and the OM10 are standard with the Pro-Ject Debut range of turntables and the Pro-Ject Mk2 Xpression turntable respectively.
The Pro-Ject Debut Mk3 Phono SB will play at 33, 45 and 78 straight out of the box and with the addition of the OM78 you will be able to play all three in the utmost convenience.
Other Pro-Ject Debut models and the Xpression require the addition of the 78 Pulley Kit as well as the 78 stylus to play 78s. This enables them to play at 33rpm and 78rpm. If all three speeds are required you will need to swap the pulley to switch between 45s and 78s or alternatively purchase a Pro-Ject Speedbox Mk2.
The Ortofon 78 Stylus comes with a small stnad and case to keep it safe when not in use.
