If you already have a turntable and want to digitise your vinyl, then this could be the product you need
In order to get your vinyl onto an iPod or MP3 player you need to digitise it. In order to digitise it you will need a turntable, a phono preamp (see our phono preamp FAQ if you are unsure what this is), a sound card and suitable software.
The Pro-Ject Phonobox USB MM/MC Phono Pre-amplifier is identical to the standard Pro-Ject Phonobox Mk2 Phono preamplifier, but with one important addition. As well as the standard analogue output it also has a built in soundcard (with a USB connection). Connect the USB output to your PC or Mac and you can record your vinyl for transfer to iPod, MP3 player or CD. Combine this with a turntable and a PC or Mac and you have everything you need to convert your vinyl into high quality digital sound files.
If you need a phono preamplifier and also want to digitise, then the Pro-Ject Phonobox USB is a great value way to do it. The Pro-Ject Phonobox USB is suitable for use with turntables fitted with either low output Moving Coil cartridges and high output Moving Magnet cartridges. Selection between the two is via a button on the back of the unit. For the price, the sound quality is exceptional.
An alternative product which is a little more expensive but offers more features is the Artcessories USB Phono Plus V2. The Artcessories unit comes complete with Audacity recording and editing software. The Phonobox USB doesn't but it is available as a free download here. If you need facilities such as headphone monitoring and line level (ie recording tape and radio) facilities as well as vinyl, then the Artcessories unit may be the one to go for.
The Phonobox USB is very well built with a brushed aluminium fascia and compact in size.
- Metal case shields the electronics from vibrational and electromagnetic interference
- Outboard power supply included
- Small size allows installation close to record player
- Optimal channel separation through dual-mono circuitry
- Special low-noise ICs used
- Gold plated RCA connection sockets
- MM/MC setting switchable via button on the back plate

Please note: Phono preamps require an interconnect lead to connect the phono preamp to your amplifier or sound system. This model does not come with such a lead as standard. We will provide a FREE basic interconnect in order that this product will work out of the box (please ask), however a cheap interconnect like this will compromise sound quality and we recommend that you purchase a good quality interconnect. See our Interconnects Section for options or see below.
