The phono cartridge is quite literally the sharp end of vinyl replay.  Cartridges are generally high output (Moving Magnet or High Output Moving Coil cartridges) or low output (most but not all Moving Coil cartridges).  You need to be sure that the phono stage in your amplifier  is suitable for high or low output.
